Fishermen continue to reel in wins

Fishermen continue to reel in wins

Brian Bowman

The Selkirk Fishermen continued their defensive dominance this season on Sunday.

Owen Derewianchuk made 21 saves in Selkirk’s solid 3-0 road victory over the Comets in Beausejour.

It was his fourth shutout of the season and improves his record to 7-0-1 this season.

“We’re solid (defensively), for sure, especially with two 21-year-old goalies with experience and a back end that has lots of experience,” said Fishermen head coach Chris Poponick. “The way that we’re playing defensively right now, I couldn’t ask for anything more. We’re keeping the shots against down and we’re keeping the big opportunities against down and then capitalizing enough to get us the (win).”

Izzy Aime, Carter Courchene, and Ryland Schroeder scored for Selkirk.

Offensively, the Fishermen have been led by Jordan Donald’s league-leading 15 goals in just 11 games.

But besides him, Selkirk has four solid lines that can contribute.

“I really like seeing that parity across our team with points and everything,” Poponick said. “We’re getting lots from different lines and that makes us more difficult to play against. You can’t just shut down one line because there’s (another line) that’s going to come back and bite you. And we’ve had some really good APs step forward for us which I am very happy with.”

With Sunday’s win, Selkirk improved its record to 14-0-1 this season and they lead the six-team league with 43 points, 13 points ahead of second place Arborg. Selkirk has played three fewer games than the Ice Dawgs.

“It’s been a lot of fun and it’s a good run,” Poponick said. “At the same time, I keep telling the guys that somebody out there wants to stop this run and we have to be prepared every game and make sure that we're coming ready to go and delivering the best effort that we can each night. As we finish up December and get into January and February, they’re more statement games getting us ready for the playoffs.”

The Fishermen, meanwhile, are taking part in The Andrushko Family Kare Kampaigne Toy Drive in support of the Children’s Hospital.

Come out to support the Fishermen this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Recreation Complex versus the North Winnipeg Satelites. Bring a toy but please no plush toys.
