Fishermen advance to CRJHL final

Fishermen advance to CRJHL final

The Selkirk Fishermen have earned a spot in the CRJHL final series.

Selkirk swept their best-of-seven semifinal series with the Lundar Falcons after a 4-2 win on Sunday afternoon.

Despite sweeping the series, the Falcons gave the Fishermen a pretty good battle.

“The scores were close, which is a credit to their goaltender, but we did carry the play for most of the series,” said Fishermen head coach Chris Poponick. “We gave up three goals in four games and of those three goals I would say one was a really good shot by them but the others were mistakes by us. It was a hard-fought series and the scores were close but we did a really good job. Our team played really sound defence.”

Selkirk took a 2-1 first-period lead and then the second period was scoreless.

Fishermen goals were scored by Nolan Milgaard, Braeden Hummel, Travis Spratt and Reece Tessier.

Ryan Gleich and Jayden Allary replied for Lundar.

Owen Derianchuk made 30 saves for the win.

The Fishermen grabbed a 3-0 series lead with a 3-1 road win over the Falcons on Friday.

Lundar’s Kayden McMahon and Selkirk’s Kasen Andrushko traded first-period goals and then Milgaard tallied in the second.

Andrushko added his second goal of the game in the third. He had a great game, finishing with three points.

“He got the hard hat for that night,” Poponick said. “He had a nice deflection to get us going after they scored really early.”

Selkirk’s Raymond Hefferman and Jordan Donald each had two assists in the game.

The Fishermen outshot the Falcons 43-11 as Brendon Hocaluk earned the win in goal.

Last Wednesday, Selkirk shut out the Falcons 3-0 in Lundar.

After two scoreless periods, Tessier, Josh Poponick (on the power play) and Hummel scored in the third.

Derewianchuk made 16 saves for the win.
