Fishermen fly past St. Malo

Fishermen fly past St. Malo

A strong third period on Saturday evening allowed the Selkirk Fishermen to remain undefeated this season.

Leading 2-1 in the third, Selkirk scored three unanswered goals in a 5-1 home victory in Capital Region Junior Hockey League action.

Selkirk dominated the game from start to finish.

“Their goaltender really stood on his head,” said Fishermen head coach Chris Poponick. “He did a great job and made some outstanding saves. We took the play to them for most of the game. The shots they had, a handful came on one power play, and the rest of the evening it was sporadic.”

Reece Tessier, Dominic Suhr, and Marcus King scored for Selkirk in the third.

St. Malo’s Teagen Fillion opened the game’s scoring in the second period. But the Fishermen replied with power-play goals by Tessier and Matt Brooks.

Selkirk finished the game 3-for-4 on the power play.

“It’s a lot of fun right now because (the power play) was clicking the other night as well in Lundar,” Poponick said. “I think we’re 50 per cent on our power play so far this season which is fantastic. I have two different units. The first one is all veterans and the second one is almost all rookies so it’s a nice little mixture.”

Selkirk outshot St. Malo 51-17 as Owen Derewianchuk earned the victory in goal.

With the win, Selkirk is now 3-0 and has outscored its opponents 18-3. The Fishermen have clearly been the best team in the CRJHL so far this season.

“We wanted to take over from where we were last year and hopefully we can keep this thing rolling and see how far we can take it,” Poponick said.

The Fishermen have a great combination of speed and size this season. They also have a really good mix of veteran and rookie players that bring a strong work ethic to the rink, said Poponick.

Selkirk’s next game is Sunday when it hosts the Lundar Falcons. Puck drop is 3 p.m.
