Fish Reel in Season Opening Victory

Fish Reel in Season Opening Victory

The Selkirk Fishermen opened their Capital Region Junior Hockey League regular season with a victory.

Selkirk slipped past the St. Malo Warriors 3-2 on Saturday evening at the Recreation Complex.

The Fishermen’s Jordan Donald opened the scoring just 4:46 into the contest with a power-play goal.

St. Malo’s Patrice Robidoux tied the score midway in the second period but Selkirk’s Cole Wasnie replied just 3:20 later with another power-play marker.

Fishermen forward Reece Tessier and St. Malo’s Evan Wuerch then traded goals late in the middle frame to close out the scoring.

Selkirk was 2-for-6 with the man advantage while St. Malo was 0-for-8.

Selkirk outshot St. Malo 39-29 as Owen Derewianchuk earned the victory.

The Fishermen are back in action on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) when they visit the Arborg Ice Dawgs. Arborg lost 5-2 to North Winnipeg in its season opener last Friday.

Selkirk’s next home game is Oct. 23 when it hosts the North Winnipeg Satelites. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.
