For the second consecutive time to start the Capital Region Junior Hockey League regular season, the Selkirk Fishermen won a one-goal game.
This time, Selkirk needed overtime to edge the Arborg Ice Dawgs 2-1 on Saturday evening.
“They absolutely gave us a battle,” said Fishermen head coach Chris Poponick. “It was quite the hockey game. We started off a little sluggish, played a little more sluggish in the second, and woke up a bit more in the third.”
Reece Tessier scored the game winner early in the OT.
Fishermen defenceman Josh Poponick had tied the score at 1-1 with a power-play goal midway in the third period.
Tessier, Poponick, and Travis Spratt each finished the game with two points.
Daron Monkman scored Arborg’s goal late in the second period on a breakaway.
The Fishermen were 1-for-8 with the man advantage while the Ice Dawgs were blanked in four opportunities.
Selkirk outshot Arborg 57-23 as Brendon Hocaluk earned the win in goal.
“Their goaltender played well and that’s always a challenge,” Poponick said. “You never know when a goalie is going to get hot on you and that’s what happened. He was hot and then we finally got a couple past him in the third and overtime.”
The Fishermen have allowed just three goals in their first two games this season. The defensive play, for the most part, has been really good despite having three rookies in the lineup on defence in the season opener and two against Arborg.
Selkirk (2-0) will have a pair of home games this weekend. The Fishermen will host the North Winnipeg Satelites on Friday (7:30 p.m.) and the Lundar Falcons Sunday (3 p.m.).
