It is only fitting that the race for first place in the Capital Region Junior Hockey League standings will be decided in the final weekend.

The Selkirk Fishermen and St. Malo Warriors will wrap up their regular-season schedules Sunday at 3:30 p.m. when they battle at the Rec Complex.

At press time Tuesday, St. Malo was tops in the five-team league with 70 points, one point ahead of Selkirk.

St. Malo hosts the last-place North Winnipeg Satelites on Friday evening.

The Fishermen blasted the Satelites 9-2 last Sunday at the Rec Complex.

Evan Bedard had a tremendous game with three goals and two assists while Reece Tessier tallied twice and Jordan Simko and Kyle Melo each had a goal and two assists apiece.

Cale Jonski and Dane Derewianchuk also scored for the Fishermen. Derewianchuk, Josh Poponick, and Travis Spratt each finished the game with two points.

Derian Emes scored in the first and second periods for North Winnipeg.

The Fishermen outshot the Satelites 53-19 as Brendon Hocaluk earned the victory.

On Saturday, Selkirk downed the Warriors 3-1 in St. Malo.

Tessier, on the power play, and Melo scored first-period goals for the Fishermen before the Warriors’ Hayden Hildebrand answered with a second-period marker.

Bedard then closed out the scoring with 8:07 remaining in the third period. He continues to lead the Fishermen with 35 points in 30 games (18 goals, 17 assists).

Jordan Simko and Dane Derewianchuk each finished the game with two assists.

Riley Bannerman stopped 25 St. Malo shots for the victory.

The Fishermen will also visit the Lundar Falcons on Friday (8 p.m.).
