Lundar’s late goal snags Fishermen

Lundar’s late goal snags Fishermen

The Selkirk Fishermen lost a real tough one on Sunday at the Rec Complex.

Elmer Maytwayshing’s second goal of the game with three seconds remaining in the third period lifted the Lundar Falcons to a 4-3 victory in Capital Region Junior Hockey League action.

“It was unfortunate because we put ourselves in a really great position after a great outing on Friday against St. Malo,” said Fishermen head coach Chris Poponick.

“But it was a (bad) bounce. They threw the puck in front of the net, the goalie made the save and kicked it out, and it went off their player’s skate and in.”

Ryan Gleich and Josh Wilkinson scored Lundar’s other goals. Travis Spratt, Cole Wasnie, and Reece Tessier replied for Selkirk.

The Fishermen trailed 3-1 in the third period.

“The guys battled back and I like the battle back but it’s tough to get bounces like that (to end a game) but, hey, it goes both ways,” Poponick reasoned.

The loss to Lundar came after Selkirk skated to an impressive 2-1 win over the Warriors in St. Malo on Friday.

It was a fantastic game with a lot of back and forth play between the league’s top two teams.

Tessier scored a first-period goal for Selkirk and then Spratt tallied in the second.

Rachonne Henry scored St. Malo’s goal midway in the third.

Riley Bannerman made 25 saves for the victory.

On Jan. 21, the Fishermen defeated the North Winnipeg Satelites 5-1.

Tyson Parker gave Selkirk a 1-0 first-period lead and then Spratt, Evan Bedard, and Tessier tallied in the second.

North Winnipeg’s Angel Gjorgievski cut the lead to 4-1 but Tessier closed out the scoring with a power-play goal with 8:48 remaining in the third.

Selkirk’s Josh Poponick had two assists in the game.

Owen Derewianchuk made 23 saves for the win.

The Fishermen, currently tied with St. Malo for top spot with 57 points apiece, will play the Ice Dawgs this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Arborg.
